Congregational Care and Cancer UCC Faith Community Nurse Leadership Team in partnership with authors James DeBoer and Laura Fitzpatrick from Yale Divinity School have launched a new resource titled: Congregational Care and Cancer.
The purpose of this resource is to orient you to some of the central questions and considerations that may emerge as you journey with those in your faith community affected by cancer. The PowerPoint slides and Handbook will guide you in leading group discussions on this subject.
The resource is geared to facilitators of faith community health ministries (both lay and nurse led, Deacons, Clergy/Pastors, Called to Care Ministries, grief ministries or any group within your congregation that practices spiritual and/or physical care and healing.

End Portion Control: The New (Ab)Normal
Summer is right around the corner and that means vacation and travel time for many of us. Traveling can make it harder to eat healthy with fast food as the highest number of resources for quick and easy meals along our highways. Not only do these places provide unhealthy foods - they also feature larger portions. Check out the website The New (Ab)Normal, which addresses the increase in portion sizes for popular food items from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Even if you are not traveling this summer, or doing a stay-cation, this will be helpful information to share as it's not always easy to find healthy, smaller-sized meals in our own communities.
End of Year Programming IdeasSeptember - National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month: Since it's inception in 1995, the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) has been committed to raising awareness of ovarian cancer in communities across the country and to providing education and support for women with ovarian cancer and their families. Help is only a call away at 1-888-OVARIAN. "Ovarian Cancer is more than a woman's disease. It affects the entire family. Believe me...I know." Other monthly websites to consider with topics: Pink Ribbon Sunday: Mammography Awareness ProgramAcross the country, congregations of all denominations are helping to save lives by joining the Pink Ribbon Sunday Program developed by the FDA Office of Womens Health (OWH). The program provides leaders like you with free resources to help educate the women in their church and community about mammography. This education is vitally important because we know that mammography screening is the best tool we have to detect breast cancer early. Lack of screening can lead to later diagnosis, later entry into treatment and even increased mortality.
Pink Ribbon activities range from mobile mammography events and health fairs to "Pink" luncheons and concerts. Pink Ribbon events can be held any day of the week depending on the beliefs and preferences of your community.
